God’s House

21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God,

Where is God’s house? It may sound like a silly question, but our answer to it is actually very important!

In one respect, ‘Our God is in the Heavens’ (Psalm 115:3). From there He rules and reigns with absolute power and authority. Thus, for Jesus Christ to be the High Priest there would mean that He ministers in the very presence of God on our behalf. He intercedes to the Father for us, and He reveals God and His word to us. Jesus mediates the new relationship we have with God.

However, Hebrews 3:6 says that ‘…Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.’ It is very easy for us to believe that God is distant and uninvolved, waiting for the day when we appear before Him in Heaven to shower us in love. That could not be further from the truth for Christians.

We believe that, even now, God has made Himself at home with each and every one of His children. When my wife and I have guests, we make sure that our house is as tidy as possible for them (well, at least the rooms that they will be in!). When Paul asks us to examine ourselves to see if we’re in the faith, it is in the context of the fact that Jesus is in us (2 Corinthians 13:5). The fact that God dwells in us means that we need to do some serious revamping of our inward life.

Yet, the One who is in us is not visiting! He is not a guest! He has moved in! He knows there’ll be times when we get messy, when we have rooms we’d rather He didn’t go in. But the One who lives with us is our great priest, ready to deal with all of our mess for us, patiently working with us to clean us up from the inside out, so that we may become more and more like the Palace that God deserves to live in!

How comfortable are you with the fact that you are the house of God?
