The Promised Holy Spirit

13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.

Ephesians 1:13-14

Every single follower of Jesus is a home to the Holy Spirit. From that moment in which ‘the word of truth’ caused us to believe in him, no believer can flee from God’s Spirit. Why is this so crucial?

The Holy Spirit was ‘promised.’ In such Old Testament passages as Joel 2:28-32, as well as on the lips of Jesus Himself (John 16:7), we are told that we will receive the gift of God’s Spirit. God only makes promises to His children that are for their good, so we can be sure that He has life-giving motivations behind promising His presence in each and every one of us.

Furthermore, the Holy Spirit ‘sealed’ us. Seals are signs of authenticity. If a letter is sealed it is clearly from the person who claimed to send it. The Holy Spirit is your assurance that God has saved you and is at work in you. ‘The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God’ (Romans 8:16).

Finally, the Holy Spirit is ‘the guarantee of our inheritance.’ In other words, He is the down payment of the future which God has prepared for us. He offers a present experience of our heavenly home. He plants the Kingdom of God in our hearts, and in such a way that whoever believes in Jesus, ‘as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water’ (John 7:38). What’s to stop us from sharing our inheritance even today?

Meditate for a few moments on the fact that God the Spirit is in you right now.
